Level it out against the door frame by placing shims behind it. Add door stops to the inside of the jamb to keep the door from swinging through it. To install a door jamb, start by measuring the door frame and cutting the wood to size.

Then, use a nail gun to secure the 2 pieces together before attaching the other side of the jamb in the same way. Once you've completed the jamb, lift it up into the door frame to make sure it fits.

If there are any gaps, slide shims, which are thin pieces of wood, between the jamb and the frame. Finally, nail the jamb in place and cut the shims to size with a utility knife.

Quick Links View Forum Leaders. Extending Door jambs on Entry Door???? Thread Tools. Ok, so I remodeled the basement and the door really needs replaced. The basement was unfinished, so the past owner put a standard 2x4 fit exit door. The walls are built with 2x6 framing. But to special order the same one with a 6. Would it be possible to build my own extensions?Installing a prehung door as part of your real estate improvement project can be a fairly simple task, unless the jambs on the casing don't match the walls.

This can happen in old houses, when new siding has been put on a house or when walls have been altered in any way, such as adding paneling on an interior wall. That changes the width between the walls where the jambs sit. This requires changing the jambs, either by getting a different door with wider jambs or making and installing extensions to widen the jambs.

The extension jamb is the only solution if the wall is not a standard dimension. Set the replacement jamb, with the door removed, inside the rough door frame with the outer edge flush against the outside wall, for an exterior door, or with the face of the wall on the outside of a room. Use a tape measure to measure the gap between the wall and the edge of the jamb. Lay a straight edge across the face of the wall and past the opening of the door; measure the gap to the straightedge to make the measurement exact.

Measure the difference in several places, on each side jamb and the top, as walls can vary slightly in thickness; be sure the jamb is held firmly so the measurements are exact. Set a table saw to the width needed for the extension, using the widest of your gap measurements.

Door Jambs & Frames

Rip three boards to that width, two long enough for the sides and one for the top. Measure the jamb to find the lengths needed and cut three pieces to fit, one for the top and two for the sides. Lay the new jamb flat on a level surface, test fit the extensions and glue them to the interior surface of that casing with wood glue. Fasten the pieces together with adjustable clamps and nail them together with a hammer and thin finishing nails -- spaced about a foot apart.

Set the nail heads with a nail set below the face of the wood and fill the holes with wood filler. Remove the clamps and set the extended jamb in the door frame to make sure it fits. Use a plane to trim off excess from the extension in any areas where it is slightly too wide. Put wood filler in any gaps where the two pieces join. Sand the extended jamb smooth with a hand sander and fine sandpaper and install it like a normal jamb.
